Super Sized Learning Opportunities
Educators are builders of the future, they have a profound belief that the future can and will be better and brighter than our past. Inland Lakes 7-12 professional educators have found low or no cost ways to improve the learning opportunities for students over the course of the last few years.
Inland Lakes offered nearly 60 additional courses to students last year and will continue for the 2011- 2012 school year. These additional learning opportunities range from courses titled: Learning with You Tube to Fire Ecology, Greek Mythology to courses designed specifically to remediate students that are not prepared for the next core course in any given core subject area.
The school districts 7-12 building follows a typical collegiate calendar. The first semester of the school year ends with Christmas break, the second semester ends the last week of April, and the spring semester, which the school calls sprint semester starts the first week in May.
Don Killingbeck, building principal, noted that the collegiate schedule with the sprint semester has allowed us to increase the learning opportunities for students while at the same time providing remediation for those students who need additional support the most. It provides a high level of accountability and fidelity to the curriculum (Grade Level Expectations/Common Core). One teacher stated, “I saw students have success that they could not have achieved without sprint”, while another teacher said, “I thought it was very effective, students were always engaged and seemed very interested in the subject at hand.”

Making Education Better - PIE&G Communities First Fund

Communities First Fund (PIE&G) regularly seeks ways to improve the communities in which they serve. This fall the fund approved a grant that will provide for two instructional workstations at Inland Lakes 7-12 building.
This generous donation from PIE&G, together with the monies raised by The Friends of Inland Lakes, has made a significant contribution to our goal of updating our workstations, though we still have a need for additional instructional workstations.

CHRISTMAS ARRIVES EARLY FOR ONE INLAND LAKES 7-12 TEACHER
Straits Area Federal Credit Union (SAFCU) annually seeks ways to help teachers. This year Lee Nash, Inland Lakes Social Studies Teacher, was the lucky recipient of an updated instructional workstation.
This generous donation from SAFCU, together with the monies raised by The Friends of Inland Lakes, has made a significant contribution to our goal of updating our workstations, though we still have a need for additional instructional workstations.
